How may divorce affect your health?

On Behalf of | Sep 13, 2021 | Divorce

No matter your age, divorce affects everyone’s health. However, adults over 50 tend to have more health complications following a divorce than their younger counterparts. Nowadays, gray divorce occurs at double the rate of the 1990s.

According to U.S. News, older people between 50 and 64 have a higher likelihood of splitting up. If you split from your spouse, there are some ways to avoid the impact on your health.

Gray divorce’s impact on your health

When going through a divorce, you may experience symptoms of depression and anxiety. Some divorcees may even experience flashbacks, nightmares and other PTSD symptoms. In addition to psychological conditions, you may have an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and Parkinson’s.

When dealing with chronic stress, you may also develop insomnia, high blood pressure or obesity. If you have health issues, the stress of the divorce can worsen them. Often, you may experience mood swings, changes in interests, muscle aches and poor memory.

Protect your health during gray divorce

You need to take steps to protect your health while going through the divorce process. First, do not isolate. Make efforts to leave the house and to speak with friends and family. Do not allow yourself to become lonely throughout the divorce. If you need to, consider joining clubs or spiritual communities.

One way to fight feelings of depression and to keep your body in good shape, you may want to exercise about 150 minutes per week. Try walking briskly or taking part in yoga. If you do not already have a pet, consider adopting a dog to take on outings.
