Head-on Accidents Can Lead to Severe and Fatal Injuries

On Behalf of | Feb 11, 2017 | Auto Accidents

Head-on auto accidents refer to cases in which two vehicles strike each other front to front. As you can imagine, these are among the deadliest kinds of motor vehicle collisions just given their nature. The lawyers at Saunders Law Group have helped a number of accident victims in the greater Bartow area with legal action over serious head-on car accidents.

We’d like to consider the nature of head-on collisions as well as how they are caused. We’ll then discuss what our legal team can do to help clients.

The Dangers of Head-On Collisions

The primary danger of a head-on collision is the sheer amount of force generated by vehicles colliding one another. With each vehicle traveling in opposite directions toward one another, the point of impact generates a tremendous amount of force, such that even low-speed head-on accidents can be extremely dangerous. Even when one vehicle is stationary, the front-impact of the two vehicles can lead to major harm.

Major head injuries, spinal cord injuries, and severe harm to internal organs may occur as a result of these sorts of accidents. It should come as no surprise that head-on accidents can be deadly.

Head-On Accident Statistics

While head-on auto accidents are often rare, they can be quite deadly. Statistics from 2005 note that just 2% of all traffic collisions in the United States; yet in that same, year, 10.1% of all traffic accident fatalities were related to head-on collisions.

Causes of Head-On Auto Accidents

Some potential causes of head-on auto accidents include the following:

  • Passing Vehicles on Two-Lane Roads – Overtaking slower vehicles on two-lane roads can be deadly, especially when your view of traffic in the oncoming lane is obscured.
  • Drunk Driving – If someone is drunk or intoxicated while driving, their decision-making skills and reflexes are seriously impaired. This increases risk of all kinds of accidents.
  • Reckless Driving – When motorists do not pay attention to lane lines, switch lanes frequently, and do not pay attention to road signs, this means danger for everyone on the road.
  • Driver Fatigue – Being sleepy or drowsy behind the wheel can be just as bad as driving while drunk. The risk of serious accidents increases when a driver is tired.
  • Cell Phone Use/Texting While Driving – Using your phone while you are behind the wheel of a care is a dangerous choice since it takes your attention away from the road. This is a major cause of rear end accidents and T-bone accidents as well.
  • Bad Road Signs and Signals – If a traffic signal malfunctions or a one-way street sign is not prominently displayed, this can lead to serious head-on collisions.
  • Poor Road Conditions – If there are pot holes, debris, and other problems with a roadway, this can cause motorists to swerve out of their lane, striking others who are nearby.
